Youth staff recently attended training for working with children who may have behavioral challenges, be on the spectrum, or simply need space and time to themselves. Our latest project in continuously improving programming for our youth is building a Calm Down Sensory Spot with bean bag chairs, noise cancellation ear muffs, stress balls, and discovery putty. Having a space just for this purpose is essential for children to learn emotional self-regulation.
We are also diligently preparing for Summer Day Camp 2018. Families are signing up school-age youth (ages 5-14) for eight amazing weeks of fun! In addition to traditional summer activities like swimming, arts & crafts, and field trips, our students also participate in a series of games that help retain math and reading skills, reducing "summer slide." In fact, consistently every summer 85-90% of our students maintain or have small gains in their math and reading skills.
